The collective units of the Center for Global Studies (CGS), LAS Global Studies, the Program in Arms Control & Domestic and International Security (ACDIS), and the Women and Gender in Global Perspectives (WGGP) center seek an Academic Coordinator to administrate a new Master of Science (MS) in Global Studies GS) degree program. The MSGS provides a professionally oriented graduate degree track that is complimentary to the LAS Global Studies BA degree and Undergraduate Certificate in Global Security. This degree will prepare students for leadership in international and domestic careers in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government, business, and transnational organizations. Interdisciplinary coursework combined with domestic and international practicum opportunities will prepare graduates to meet the intellectual and practical challenges facing global governance and civil society organizations. The MSGS curriculum includes three tracks: 1) Global Security; 2) Gender and Public Policy; and 3) Global Governance. Students will complete coursework in their chosen area of focus, which may include a specific topical area such as Global Health or Sustainable Development. The tracks involve a practicum or capstone project, and demonstrated competency in a second language. The successful candidate will teach and mentor students, and administer the program.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in key courses that support the M.S. in Global Studies, including traditional and online undergraduate teaching, graduate instruction, and continuing education, and supporting the academic mission of the four units collaborating on the MS: Center for Global Studies (CGS), the Program in Arms Control, Domestic, and International Security (ACDIS), Liberal Arts & Sciences Global Studies (LASGS) and the Center for Women, Gender, and Global Perspectives (WGGP). Coordinate development of curriculum in Global Studies with faculty affiliates, Associate Director, and Director
  • Administer the graduate program, including student advising, the petition process, supervision of capstone requirements, identification, and planning of internships, liaising with the Graduate College and University Registrar, recruiting students, program evaluation and ensuring compliance with all university policies and regulations
  • Contribute to collaborative development of M.S. in Global Studies programming, including conferences, lectures, symposia, roundtable discussions, professional development opportunities, and study tours
  • Administer program budget. Participate in planning, applying for, administering, and tracking grant funding in consultation with Associate Director
  • Perform other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in an area relevant to Global Studies or a related field
  • Advising and coordinator experience in academic programming
  • Minimum 1 year instructional experience in Global-oriented fields
  • International experience (including study abroad experience)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Global Governance, Global Security or Gender and Public Policy
  • Experience in online teaching
  • Experience working in public policy, civil society, or international development
  • Sensitivity to the functioning of an interdisciplinary academic program within the context of a complex university
  • Initiative and creativity in program development
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Strong intercultural skills
  • Working knowledge of one or more languages other than English
  • Strong computing skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and desktop publishing software or similar
  • Ability to work harmoniously with faculty, staff, and students a wide variety of disciplines, and with representatives from national and international institutions
  • Ability to assume responsibility and to work independently with minimum guidance
  • Ability and willingness to periodically travel for recruitment, academic program, and partnership development and to execute student professional development activities
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the deadline date. The budgeted salary range for the position is $60,000-65,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (remote work and in-person work in Champaign-Urbana each week). Sponsorship for Work authorization is not available for this position.
