PLACEMENT: Placement on the salary schedule is dependent on qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY
A Guided Academic Pathway (GAP) Advisor provides support for advising needs of specialized programs or academic service areas. The GAP Advisor for Health and Public Service advises students in allied (non-nursing) health disciplines, and also assists with public safety program advising as needed. They support the department by working with program coordinators and faculty advisors to address student recruitment, retention, and completion needs. GAP Advisors also assist program coordinators in developing assessment activities, benchmarks and outcomes for assigned programs or service areas. GAP Advisors foster a positive, collaborative, and student-centered environment that promotes learning and goal attainment. While non-instructional, the position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College faculty contract. Position involves occasional travel to other campuses; some evenings and weekends are required.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide intentional advising and referral for students in assigned health and public service disciplines; recommend the best educational path for degree completion.
  • Assist department administration in coordinating specialized support programs or academic service, including advising, supporting the intake process for students utilizing the services, data collection using student retention software, reporting, and assessment.
  • Manage data collection and assessment of assigned specialized support programs or academic services.
  • Refer at-risk/high-risk students and students with personal or life concerns to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Student Mental Health and Wellness Center, or other appropriate resources for counseling support and referral as needed.
  • Assist students on academic warning, probation, or suspension; evaluate and make recommendations on petitions and amendments to students' programs of study;
  • Monitor student academic progress; securely maintain student files and records.
  • Ensure a seamless transition for transfer students by providing transfer advising and referral to senior colleges or universities; assist program coordinators/faculty advisors in evaluating transfer transcripts for equivalencies.
  • Identify patterns in interrupted (stop out) student degree completion (withdrawal, probation, course failures) and develop strategies to support student retention.
  • Serve as an agent of the Registrar and authorize course withdrawals, adds, and drops as needed in consultation with faculty advisors.
  • Develop monthly GAP reports highlighting student progress via the intentional academic advising model utilizing data from all sources including academic intervention software.
  • Provide training for faculty advisors, faculty and staff on advising and curriculum updates or changes.
  • Collaborate with department chair and dean, marketing and other offices to support outreach efforts to recruit students in HPS disciplines at internal and external events/fairs.
  • Organize outreach campaigns to provide support for students in HPS programs; work with the college communication center to assist in the development and delivery of campaigns as needed.
  • Hold monthly meetings with the department chair and academic dean.
  • Become thoroughly familiar with, and comply with, college policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in education, human relations, psychology, human services, counseling, social work, behavioral science or related; or a Master's degree with at least 18 post-graduate hours of education in the above.
  • Experience in, and knowledge of, standards and best practices in higher education advising for allied healthcare professions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication; interpersonal, time management, human relations and problem-solving skills; and training and presentation skills.
  • Strong technical data evaluation, analysis, and reporting skills.
  • Familiarity with the community college environment.
  • Familiarity with college student information and reporting systems such as Ellucian/Colleague, Navigate, degree audit and other advising, planning and database technology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the college's core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • In addition to allied health programs, knowledge of or experience in public safety/public service careers (i.e.; fire science, law enforcement, cybersecurity, etc).
  • College instructional experience
  • English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Normal office physical demands.
  • Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from community events.
  • Ability to travel in state and nationally.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.
