This role will use process/chemical/analytical knowledge, in-depth technical expertise and (plant) operations experience to identify, develop and implement optimum analytical technology in support of process and product performance.

Essential Functions

  • Ability to serve as back up for Analytical Shift Technicians
  • Ability to serve as back up for QC Manager
  • Train and coach others on analytical systems and technology
  • Train incoming lab chemists
  • Daily raw data and LIMS review for production analyses
  • Full review of CofA generated while on site before release
  • Help oversee the day to day activities in the analytical lab
  • Maintain lab inventory and update/order as needed
  • Instrument standardization and calibration
  • Troubleshoot and/or repair instrumentation
  • Review, update, and/or develop test methods
  • Schedule and/or perform complicated analyses
  • o GCMS
  • o Creating GC Methods
  • Responsible for preparing round robin samples for analytical shift chemists and compiling the data
  • Perform non-production analyses for customers
  • Sample shipping, receiving, and coordination under DOT, IATA and international regulations. Includes products, waste, etc.
  • Participates in internal audits
  • Maintain standard and reagent records
  • o Evaluate expiration dates on standards on a periodic basis
  • Follow EH&S and Operating Discipline / Quality Systems procedures and practices
  • Oversee and maintain lab and retain area cleanliness
  • Document, communicate, and archive results
  • Evaluate validity of data, apply statistics, and interpret results
  • Help troubleshoot plant and customer problems
  • Provide technical expertise for:
  • o analytical technology and information
  • o process chemistry
  • o product composition and properties
  • o problem prevention
  • o root cause or failure analysis
  • Work with other departments to improve manufacturing processes, products and analytical systems, concerning value generation potential, performance and reliability
  • Contribute value creation by continuous improvement of the analytical work processes and related tools and performance metrics
Education Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a related field.
Experience Qualifications
  • Required 5+ years Analytical lab experience
Licenses and Certifications
  • Three year D.O.T. shipper certification. within 1-1/2 Yrs Required
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods of time, up to 12 hours per day.
  • Sitting. Working from a seated position for up to 12 hours per day.
  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms one to two times per day.
  • Balancing. Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling and walking, standing or crouching on narrow or slippery surfaces.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force, exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to move objects forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force consistently to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds consistently from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Possible subject to environmental conditions. Activities could occur inside and outside.
  • Subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour.
  • Subject to vibration. Exposure to movements of the extremities or whole body. Operate/drive utility vehicle.
  • Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE for tasks as required. FRC uniform, hard hat, safety toe work boots, safety glasses, gloves etc.
  • Additional responsibilities for Bayport site: Review nightly logistics schedule and ensure evening shift is prepared Periodic CofA review for completion and accuracy (spot checks) for CofA generated nights and weekend Review flow sheets for specification accuracy Responsible for stability program of products Provide assistance for R&D sample analysis if needed LIMS Administrator o Set up specifications from flow sheets into LIMS Develop response plans for non-routine requests, taking into account the value creation potential and considering a wide range of technical options
