Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director's Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department's guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.
Primary purpose of the Athletic Event Management unit is to provide outstanding service to each of the more than 30 discreet business units associated with athletic varsity competition with a focus on student-athlete experience. For the 28 Varsity Athletic programs, there are more than 250 athletic competitions annually with 1,000,000 campus visitors and a GameDay Personnel overlay of more than 2,000 staff, vendors, volunteers and contractors with an annual financial expenditure of $3,000,000. This unit is responsible for the planning, coordination, execution, final decision making for all elements related to and evaluation of GameDay with a focus on safety and positive enjoyment for student-athletes, staff and fans. The philosophy of this unit is an emphasis of collaboration and empowerment to supporting units.
Under the direction of the Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Event Management this position leads, manages and directs Athletic GameDay, a university program of considerable scope and complexity, requiring specialized knowledge of the program and the associated processes and procedures. This position will oversee all operations and services focusing on Athletic Event Operations leadership with strategic planning for the assigned athletic events and key roles for the department and greater Carolina Campus Community. The additional focus of this position is overall staff and fan engagement. A strong purpose of this position is developing, maintaining and strengthening collaborative relationships throughout the Athletic Department, and with campus-wide operating units including The Rams Club, Tar Heel Sports Properties, Auxiliary Staff Services Contract (Rhino), Aramark Concessions, Field House catering, Environmental Health and Safety, University Events, Facility Services, Emergency and Risk Management, Campus Police, Campus Recreation, Transportation & Parking, and University Administration.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and experience related to the area of assignment, including one year of supervisory program experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:Understanding of Division I Athletic policies and protocols; ability to multitask, be proactive, calm and personable under pressure; previous experience with event management and possess interpersonal skills; work effectively as a team member; possess listening and communication skills in various environments; strong situational awareness and the ability to prioritize and stay composed under pressure; ability to take direction, exercise critical thinking, and ability to design event related materials; possession of emergency management skills; familiarity with various communications devices (PA, Radio, Scoreboards); AED, First Aid/CPR and experience with two-way radios also desired.
General knowledge of all ACC and NCAA competition guidelines related to game management.
Ability to stand long periods of time, perform medium force: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20 pounds frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions; subject to hazards and atmospheric conditions; subject to oils; exposed to infectious diseases.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
