The Opportunity:

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The CEE Department seeks to hire an outstanding candidate specializing in Geotechnical Engineering.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of high-quality research, a commitment to diversity and teaching excellence and the ability to develop a fundamental research program. Applicants

with expertise in, but not limited to, one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

(a) post-fire geohazards (slope stability, mass wasting, landslides);

(b) thermo-mechanical characterization and/or modeling of soils;

(c) civil- and/or geotechnical-infrastructure adaptability to climate change-related hazards, and

(d) sustainable geomaterials, in general, and particularly those resulting from climate change effects (e.g. wildfire-related waste).

A culture of interdisciplinary research with a diverse group of faculty and students is valued, and the candidate will be encouraged to contribute to existing research strengths within the department and across the university in synergistic areas involving WSU's new Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory (https://labs.wsu.edu/geotech/), WSU's Risk-Informed Decision-Making Lab: Infrastructure Systems and Community (https://labs.wsu.edu/jiyunlee/), Washington Center for Asphalt Technology (https://wcat.ce.wsu.edu/), the Composite Materials & Engineering Center (www.cmec.wsu.edu), the National Center for Transportation Infrastructure Durability and Life-Extension (https://tridurle.wsu.edu/about/), the Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach (https://cereo.wsu.edu/), and WSU's Laboratory for Atmospheric Research (www.lar.wsu.edu).

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field at the start of the appointment.

  • Ability to develop a strong, externally-funded research program leading to national recognition, and contribute to high-quality undergraduate and graduate teaching and departmental service.

  • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to collaborate with diverse internal and external groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated records in teaching and professional service

  • A demonstrated background in one or more of the targeted areas mentioned above

  • A demonstrated potential for meeting the expectations through activities such as journal publications, professional conference presentations, teaching experience, outreach, and related activities

  • Professional Engineering licensure

  • Understanding of or demonstrated experience with neurodiversity frameworks and schemes (e.g. visual thinking methods) and how they can contribute to geotechnical research and education

  • Strong records of scholarship, teaching, and professional service.

  • A demonstrated background in one or more of the following area: post-fire geohazards, thermo-mechanical characteristics and/or moedeling of soils, civil and/or geotechnical infastructure adapabiliy to climate change related hazards, sustainable geomaterials

  • A strong record of journal publications, professional conference presentations, teaching experience, outreach, and related activities.

9 Month Annual Salary: $100,000 - $108,000 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
