Based at the University of Chicago Press, BiblioVault is an ebook distributor, ebookstore, and resource for non-profits. We provide digital print support, online book tools, and ebook fulfillment options for academic publishers, serving 100 university presses and their customers, in the US and worldwide.

Job Summary

The BiblioVault Operations Assistant is part librarian, part proof-reader, part counselor, and part trouble-shooter. You'll need to be tech-adept, good at pattern recognition, friendly with correspondents, and able to tackle projects. The position is on the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus.

Responsibilities

  • Converts, evaluates, preps, and preflights PDFs for short-run digital printing.
  • Assists publishers with printer settings, file setup, and web interface.
  • Maintains metadata about book files, using online browser-based application and Unix tools.
  • Makes corrections or repairs to PDFs, epubs, and other electronic files.
  • Converts electronic book files to other formats or for other uses.
  • Resolves publisher issues with speed and flexibility.
  • Support includes email accounts, connectivity issues, operating system problems, spyware/virus removal; as well as support for various enterprise applications and a variety of desktop software packages. Writes support documents for common problems and questions to be maintained in the IT Services Knowledge Base.
  • Updates daily status reports and shift handover reports. Acts as a liaison between customers and technical escalation teams by coordinating installation and maintenance services. Maintains communications with customers during the problem resolution process. Provides a single view to the organization for information technology related questions, requests, and problems. Follows proper standard operating procedures.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.

Experience:
  • 3+ years experience with computer hardware and software, preferably word processors, text formatters, or desktop publishing.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Experience working with PDFs and Acrobat.
  • Familiarity with both Windows and Mac machines.

Preferred Competencies
  • Careful attention to successful completion of all tasks.
  • Awareness of and care for fine details.
  • Diagnose and quickly resolve problems involving data conversion and/or user error.
  • Learn complex procedures quickly; and to adapt to evolving processes.
  • Comfort in working in a group setting.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative.
  • Read and understand scholarly material in English.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and speaking.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
