Job Summary
The Brickmason Foreperson plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises work of assigned brickmasons and completes fabrication, installations, and repairs as a working foreperson.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs brickmason work and assigns work to brickmasons to be completed in accordance with prioritized needs and schedules. Provides estimates as requested by providing labor and material costs for assigned projects which may include departmental charge-out, maintenance repairs, and preventative maintenance. Monitor and control craft-related cost. Works closely with the work management center, project coordinators, engineering, and building maintenance to meet the requirements of campus.
  • Responsible for tools, equipment, and materials assigned for use in the brickmason shop. Delivers tools, materials, and personnel to job site as needed operating a university vehicle. Drives and operates service vehicles used for brickmason maintenance, installations, or repairs.
  • Maintains records of work completed, material purchasing, overtime lists, and training records. Verifies and approves mobile timekeeping and/or timecards.
  • Makes recommendations for hiring and discipline and addresses employee performance issues.
  • Responsible for safety and policy enforcement.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Additional Physical Demands
    1. Must adhere to F&S safety and health policies by ensuring shop tools and equipment are functioning properly, monitoring personnel to assure safety and security policies are being followed, promoting safe operations, and supporting departmental safety initiatives and programs. Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts.
    2. Must be able to work amid hazards of work sites such as exposure to chemicals, radiation, heat, cold, dust, fumes, noise, animals, laboratories, coal fired power plant,and energized electrical equipment. Use of Personal Protective Equipment is required when hazards exist.
    3. May work in extreme weather conditions and temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
    4. Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and crawl in order to access any work area such as attics, crawl spaces, false floors, ceilings, and scaffolds. Must be able to work at heights on lifts, scaffolds, ladders of all types, and bucket truck for lengths of time.
    5. Must be able to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily, and the workload associated with the position can be stressful at times.
    6. Works at the direction of the superintendent of building maintenance. Work is assigned through the work management group, service office, superintendent of building maintenance, or director of building maintenance or his designee in oral or written form. Must be able to work self-managed with limited supervision.
    7. Must be able to interact with supervision, peers, employees, customers, and the campus community. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout campus.
    8. Must be able to deliver tools, materials, and personnel to job site as needed operating a university vehicle.
    9. The foreperson is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities & Services by exemplifying high standards of leadership, loyalty, craftspersonship, and dedication.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • A current/valid brickmason journeymen card with nine (9) years (108 months) of actual work in the trade, including apprentice or vocational training.
    • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at time of hire.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Asbestos Supervisor License, Asbestos Building Inspector license.
    • Current HAZWOPER 40-hour training.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to effectively supervise others (plan, organize, prioritize, assign, and follow up on assignments).
    • Ability to obtain within six months of being hired an Asbestos Supervisor license, Asbestos Building Inspector license.
    • Thorough knowledge of brickmason trade and techniques.
    • Ability to give directions both orally and in written form that is concise and understandable.
    • Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all brickmason work and university facilities standards.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1596 - Brickmason Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is established based on a collective bargaining agreement and is currently $41.96/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
