The College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences (CAHSS) is the largest and most diverse academic unit of the University of Denver, where students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed at nearly any career in today's globally connected society. Half of the College's departments and schools offer master's or PhD programs.

Position Summary

CAHSS is hiring two (2) Business Officers who will manage the accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance functions for CAHSS. Reporting to the Director of Business & Operations, the Business Officer communicates budget and policy information to faculty, staff, students, and vendors. This position also works closely with CAHSS departmental faculty and staff on fiscal and operational processes, including processing of day-to-day financial transactions, processing and managing benefitted as well as non-benefitted hires, tracking expenses, management and dissemination of fiscal year deliverables and deadlines, and policy implementation. The Business Officer also interprets and enforces university budgetary and expense policies.

Essential Functions

Business Operations & Reporting

  • Assist with analysis of enrollments; salary expenditures for full time faculty, adjuncts, and staff; graduate financial aid; departmental operating expenses, procurement, and other areas as directed by the Director of Business and Operations:
    • Tuition and enrollment modeling to support admission, financial aid, and quarterly tuition forecasting
    • Review and reconcile monthly payroll reports to monitor salary expenditures.
    • Monitor balances and set annual expenditures from gift and endowed funds.
    • Understand, implement, and ensure compliance with all University and CAHSS procurement policies and procedures.
    • Establish, monitor, and audit CAHSS funds, including awards, gifts, endowments, and other designated funds.
    • Process graduate financial aid entries in consultation with the Director of Graduate Recruitment and Admissions, perform multiple financial aid audits, and provide support to departmental staff in this area including endowment and gift funds used for scholarships.
  • Analyze moderately complex business operations and financial statements and provide information to enable decision-making by budget managers.
    • Perform budget analyses and assist in conducting budgetary planning and forecasting in a financial environment with variable revenue and expense.
    • Provide monthly reporting and updates to appropriate personnel with budgetary management responsibility.
    • Meet with budgetary managers to support their understanding of budget reports, analyze spending, and make necessary adjustments.
    • Manage budget entries in-year, inter divisional and cross-divisional agreements.
  • Work closely with the Director of Business and Operations to support the day-to-day review of business transactions of CAHSS.
    • Approve journal entries, process budget entries, and new org/fund requests, and other workflow items.
    • Establish and enforce CAHSS financial guidelines and communicate to departments as necessary.
    • Provide individual onboarding and training to new staff in departments including training on DU financial policies, procedures, and expense management software.
    • Provide ongoing financial and operational support and training to all departments as needed and act as liaison between departments and University Financial Services, Procurement, and the Controller's Office.
    • Create and disseminate annual year-end training to CAHSS departments to ensure CAHSS compliance with year-end policies and procedures.
Human Resources Support
  • Support the HR functions of the unit, including: benefited hiring processes and non-benefited approvals, position changes, separations and coordination of the College's adjunct faculty hiring (monitoring approved allocations, tracking hires, approving entries), student workers and work-study arrangements.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Business and Operations in managing the unit's benefitted positions, including: working with relevant offices on position descriptions, preparing postings, compensation review, and assisting departmental staff and leaders during searches.
  • Manage College level payroll functions, including: researching payroll transactions, preparing HR/Payroll reporting for College leadership, coordinating with department staff on payroll policies and procedures.
  • Maintain all HR paperwork in compliance with University policies.
  • Serve as the point person for staff performance review process for employees and managers.
  • Foster effective working relationships with the University's Human Resources and Inclusive Community and Shared Services to advance CAHSS' goals and initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of accounting, budget and business practices and familiarity with HR concepts, practices, procedures and basic employment laws.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as budget spreadsheets and other financial documents and synthesize large quantities of complex data into actionable information.
  • A keen eye for detail and desire to probe further into data.
  • Competence to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the University.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork and to functioning in a high-paced, collaborative work environment.
  • Proven ability to work with a high level of independence, maintain confidentiality, prioritize assignments and division needs.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and plan projects; time management and solid organizational skills.
  • Ability to understand, implement, and ensure divisional compliance with all University and CAHSS policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse and underrepresented populations, using an inclusive approach.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in business administration or financial management or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in financial management and analytical work
  • Experience working in Higher Education
  • Knowledge of Banner, Concur, and Kronos
Working Environment
  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate
  • As this position will support departments across the College, individual(s) must be willing to meet with stakeholder at locations across campus.
Physical Activities
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to sit or stand in front of a room for an extended period of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Option to work remotely up to two days per week.

Salary Grade

The salary grade for this position is 9.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $60,000-$70,000

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
