Chief of Police

Maricopa Community Colleges, a community college system across Maricopa County and the metro Phoenix, Arizona area, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next chief of police. This is an on-site leadership role.

Maricopa County Community College District is one of the nation's largest and most innovative community college systems. Popularly known as Maricopa Community Colleges, the district comprises ten individually accredited colleges and 31 satellite locations serving approximately 100,000 students and employing over 10,000 faculty and staff. Since its founding in 1962, the Maricopa Community Colleges system has continued to be an essential resource for local communities in the Greater Phoenix Metro Area and a gateway to affordable higher education, particularly for disadvantaged, diverse, and first-generation students. It offers over 600 associate and baccalaureate degree and certificate programs.

The chief of police oversees the law enforcement and crime prevention activities of the Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD) police department, including developing, planning, and implementing policies and procedures designed to provide a safe and secure environment at all college sites. The chief of police is the chief law enforcement official of the district and is charged with helping to create a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Leadership and indirect supervision of over 100 staff on ten campuses through the college district are key responsibilities of the chief of police.

The anticipated hiring range is $121,000 to $158,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field and six years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, which includes two years of police command-level experience (lieutenant or above). An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the job's essential duties such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered. Possession of a valid State of Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification and possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver's License., or ability to acquire these credentials upon hire are required. Must successfully pass a comprehensive background check and may be required to submit to periodic comprehensive background checks. Preferred qualifications include collegiate law enforcement experience and advanced police leadership training certificate, i.e., FBI National Academy, Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO), Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command, Southern Police Institute, etc.
