Purpose Statement

The purpose of the Design Engineer position is to develop innovative and functional designs that meet project specifications and client needs. This role involves creating detailed engineering plans, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring that designs are cost-effective, manufacturable, and adhere to quality standards. The Design Engineer plays a key role in transforming concepts into practical, high-performance solutions that drive the success of the company's products.

Job responsibilities and tasks

Performs machinery design functions related to the processing of customer orders, redesign of Andritz products and product configurations, involving pneumatic, electrical and mechanical technologies. Assists major projects, including field check, design layout, and detailing. Based on product / customer requirements, and as directed by the Engineering Manager, conducts design investigations (alternate design approaches, alternative technologies, component redesigns, alternate suppliers, etc.) on assigned projects. Works independently within Andritz design criteria to select and evaluate components, hardware and materials necessary to meet project design requirements.

Prepares accurate and timely computer based engineering drawings, layouts and graphic representations as required. Modifies engineering drawings and updates drawings as required. Investigates and executes Engineering Change Requests / Orders. Prepares machinery spare parts lists, bills-of-material and operations manuals as required.

Works directly with the Production Team to ensure their designs are manufactured accurately and in a timely manner. When needed may need to spend time on the production floor to assist in the inspection or assembly of one of their designs.

Works directly with sales representatives and customers by phone and at customer site to install, troubleshoot and evaluate Andritz products and R&D initiatives.

Works with sales representatives and field service team to perform measure-up trips and technical data gathering for projects as required, which may include travel where applicable.

Within skill capabilities and availability, performs other duties as assigned to assure the efficient operation of the department and company.

Complies with all company guidelines, safety program, quality program, rules and regulations.

Education, professional experience, and qualification preferred/required

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S. engineering discipline) or equivalent; 5 or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Autocad/Inventor skills are essential
  • Familiarity with Manufacturing/Machining environments
  • Experience onsite at papermills/within the paper making industry preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.), with familiarity with SAP and Access, preferred.
  • Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements, to include regarding confidentiality at all times.
  • Represent Company interests at all times and be sensitive to customer satisfaction (understand strong sense of urgency and importance of follow-up).
  • Possess strategic, logical, and methodical thinking for probelm solving, organization, time management, prioritization, and independent decision-making skills, while handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Accurately complete required documentation.
Physical and Mental Qualifications

Position performed in an office environment. Periodic visits to mills and manufacturing facilities are required. Environment: Exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, dust, dirt, fumes, welding machines, heavy duty magnets and manual/remote controlled devices using radio signals. Physical conditions for position: Sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, kneel, stoop, crouch, climb, ascend/descend stairs, lift, up to, 25 lbs. Must have visual acuity, excellent mobility, good hearing, manual dexterity, good balance, ability to endure long hours, and wear required personal protective equipment. All tasks performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
