Job Summary:

The Director of Workers' Compensation is responsible for managing the comprehensive, self-insured workers' compensation program for Wellstar Health System, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations while minimizing the financial impact of workplace injuries. This individual will lead a dedicated team of two workers' compensation adjusters and manage relationships with third-party administrators (TPAs), healthcare providers, and legal counsel. The Director will oversee the return-to-work program, participate in claims mediation, and drive continuous improvement in claims management and injury prevention efforts.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Workers Compensation Program Management
Lead and oversee the entire self-insured workers' compensation program for Wellstar Health System. Responsible for financial oversight, administration, coordination and effectiveness of the self-insured workers compensation program and Return-to-Work program with a focus on implementing process improvement.
Oversees all aspects of Wellstar Health System workers compensation claims, including medical-only and lost-time claims, to control and contain costs.
Ensures compliance with the rules and regulations set forth by the State Board of Workers Compensation.
Provide regular reporting to senior leadership on program performance, trends, and opportunities for improvement of the WC and RTW program.
Identifies, implements, and manages improvements in handling job-related injuries and claims to optimize the overall claims process.
Represents the healthcare system in claims mediation, settlement negotiations, and litigation.

Return-to-Work Program
Closely oversees the return-to-work program and RTW department, partnering with Return-to-Work coordinator, to ensure a timely return for any injured team members.
Develops proactive and innovative approaches to ensure efficient processes are in place to facilitate the timely and coordinated return to work for Wellstar Health System team members.
Works closely with facility managers and medical providers to coordinate return-to-work efforts.
Responsible for the annual budget of the Return-to-Work program/department and monitors the financial effectiveness of Wellstars self-insured workers compensation program.

Loss Prevention Management and Compliance
Partners with Wellstar Health System Occupational Safety and Health team, facility, and market leadership to develop loss prevention strategies tailored to specific incident trends.
Identifies trends in workers compensation claims through Wellstar's online event reporting system and reports these trends to each facilities designee and recommends corrective actions.
Performs in-service training with various system departments as needed, with regards to the workers compensation program, return-to-work program, cost reduction, and team member safety.
Serves as a member of Wellstar's Workplace Safety Council.
Ensures accurate and timely posting of the required OSHA Form 300A on an annual basis.

Team Leadership and Relationship Management
Oversight of the Workers Compensation department, including daily operations, hiring, performance reviews, pay evaluations, discipline, and team member retention.
Fosters collaboration and ensure efficient claims management within the team.
Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external partners, including case management, TPAs, legal counsel, and medical providers.

Performs other duties as assigned

Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.

Required Minimum Education

  • Bachelors Risk Management or Bachelors Business Administration/Management or Bachelors Health Administration

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

    Additional License(s) and Certification(s):

    Licensed Claims Adjuster in the State of Georgia Preferred

    Required Minimum Experience:

    Minimum 10 years directly managing workers compensation claims experience. Required
    Minimum 7 years managing a team of workers compensation claims adjusters. Required

    Required Minimum Skills:

    Must be organized professional and courteous, and able to handle assignments with a high degree of accuracy and timeliness.
    Must be able to work effectively under stress and time deadlines.
    Ability to interface with all levels of the healthcare system and utilize discretion in handling confidential information.
    Experience working with RL Solutions Risk Management Information System preferred.
    Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point required.
