Lecturer in Mathematics Fall 2024

Location:
Knoxville Tennessee
Open Date:
Nov 20, 2023
Description:

The Mathematics Department at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks outstanding educators to contribute to its teaching mission by filling several lecturer positions to start on August 1, 2024.  These are non-tenure track, nine-month, full-time teaching positions. A Master's Degree in Mathematics (not Mathematics Education) is required, and PhD in Mathematics or related area (including Mathematics Education) is preferred.

Full-time lecturers have voting rights in the department and are supervised by both the Associate Department Head for General Math Education and the Department Head. There is a well-defined promotion ladder from Lecturer (up to 3-year appointment) to Senior Lecturer (3-year appointment) to Distinguished Lecturer (5-year appointment). Lecturers also can teach in summer and receive highest priority for those additional teaching opportunities. Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Distinguished Lecturers in the Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee are an integral part of the educational mission of the university. Lecturers of all ranks contribute to the pedagogically innovative teaching/learning and hold a variety of service roles in the Department, College, and Campus including serving on the University Faculty Senate. Several Senior and Distinguished Lecturers engage in the professional development of graduate teaching assistants as part of the departmental GTA Teaching Advising Program. Others network with Math Instructors from other institutions through the MAA CoMInDS project. Outstanding lecturers with a PhD in mathematics may have the opportunity to teach and mentor students as part of the department's unique online Master of Mathematics (MM) program aimed at working high school teachers.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is the flagship university in the Tennessee state higher education system. The University is in the midst of an expansion and these positions fit into a long-term growth plan. UTK is a land-grant university and values engaged forms of research/scholarship/creative activity, teaching and service, and considers evidence of these commitments in the records of applicants. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. In recent years, the Department of Mathematics has steadily increased its research and teaching prominence both within the University and in the larger mathematical community. The state of Tennessee is in strong fiscal condition, and the University has provided salary increases for the past ten consecutive years. Knoxville is a vibrant and diverse medium-sized city located within easy driving distance to Ashville, Nashville, Atlanta, the Great Smoky Mountains, and Oak Ridge National Lab. It has a beautiful and walkable downtown, varied nightlife, eclectic shopping and restaurants, and relatively low cost of living.
