Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing high-quality services to students and other members of the university community. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.

Maintenance Mechanic - Commercial and Residential Kitchen Equipment:

This Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice position is offered under the terms of the Stanford University and SEIU Apprenticeship Program. The purpose of this program is to train an Apprentice to be a Building Maintenance Mechanic with a Commercial and Residential Kitchen Equipment emphasis to support Residential and Dining Enterprise facilities maintenance needs. Upon acceptance into the program, the Apprentice will be assigned to the Maintenance Operations team. Successful completion of the Apprenticeship Program will develop skills in building systems maintenance.

The program consists of full-time (40 hours per week) on-the-job training and two evenings (3 hours each evening) of classroom education. Classroom training will take place at San Jose City College.The Apprentice will work under the direction of a supervisor, work with a journeyperson, and be assigned a mentor. Apprentices will be exposed to various trade duties covering the curriculum coursework. Excellent attendance, engagement, and performance at both on-the-job tasks and the classroom portion of the program is a strict requirement. Through classroom work and on-the-job training, apprentices will be trained in the basic skills and tools of the trade.


Successful completion of this four-year program does not guarantee a position at Stanford but will prepare the candidate for application for a Maintenance Person III Building Maintenance Technician position supporting the Commercial and Residential Kitchen Equipment shop.

Job Responsibilities:

·Work under general supervision and perform carpentry, automotive, and/or maintenance tasks of substantial complexity.

· Employees in this classification typically work within prescribed procedures but may make unique and innovative modifications as necessary to safely and expeditiously discharge their assigned work.

·Work may be spot-checked while in progress or inspected upon completion.

·May work alone, and/or as a member of a crew.

·Interact with kitchen staff, location faculty members, and students.

·Troubleshoot reported issues or complaints with kitchen equipment.

·Apply notes to service call work orders appropriately.

·Update dispatch, lead dept technician, and/or manager on the status of service calls daily; distinguish high-priority requests needing primary attention.

·Assists with all types of installations of commercial food service equipment.

·Assemble appropriate company tool stock & parts stock for an assigned service vehicle.

·Individual technicians will learn to perform all connections and disconnections of this equipment according to all applicable codes regarding gas, electric, water, and steam services.

·Ability to service utility supplies (water/electricity/gas) to equipment as well as associated drain lines.

·Must take responsibility for assessing repairs for proper operation and acquiring parts through stock and or special-order approval.

·Adhere to proper safety protocols as designated by Stanford University.

·Customize service route or schedule to adhere to customer (student/resident) needs.

·Communicate effectively with site cooks and dining hall management when informing them of repair status.

Residential Appliance

·Inspects, maintains, and repairs all types of commercial food service equipment.

·Ability to read wiring diagrams.

Minimum Qualifications:

·At least 18 years old.

·Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of outside weather conditions.

·Ability to work safely.

·Must successfully pass a background check.

·Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

·Must pass an aptitude test (math, English, and critical thinking) with a score of at least 80%.

·Must be able to work full-time and attend evening educational classes.

·Ability to perform assigned work at a level appropriate for a Maintenance Mechanic Apprentice.

·Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

·Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing as needed.

·Ability to learn and apply safe work practices, including but not limited to, hazardous waste management and handling, Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Confined Space procedures, and chemical safe practices.

·Ability to perform various maintenance and moving tasks including but not limited to, working from step ladders, must be able to lift heavy materials frequently each day, work overhead, kneel, stoop, stand, crawl, or sit for long periods, work in all types of weather.

·Ability to respond to emergency calls in the evening and on weekends.

·Willingness to work variable shifts and nights or weekends.

Certificates and Licenses Required:

·Valid California Class C Noncommercial Driver's License.

Working Conditions:

·May be exposed to radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise >80db, allergens, biohazards, chemicals, and asbestos.

·May work in confined spaces, at heights from 4 to over 10 feet, and be exposed to hot and cold temperature extremes.

The Apprentice will be paid at the initial hourly rate of $30.70 with an increase at six 6-month intervals if performance and progress in the program are satisfactory.
