About this opportunity:
Cenovus is looking for a Mass Balance and Energy Optimization Engineer for the Superior, WI Refinery. This is a new position reporting to the Process Engineering Manager, this individual will implement the Downstream Measurement Standard, analyze, and report on mass balance and energy performance, and work to improve the units and refinery fence line mass balance.

While part of the process engineering team, the individual will work closely with the Planning and Integrated Value Chain teams to facilitate refinery performance analysis and tune the crude selection tool. As well as work with the area process engineers to identify and track areas where energy efficiency can be achieved, and work closely with the business and technical teams to reduce value loss by correctly identifying and remediating sources of hydrocarbon loss.

What you'll do:

Mass Balance

  • Implement the Downstream Measurement Standard
  • Run the unit mass balance model daily and ensure its statistical accuracy
  • Attend daily operational meetings to ensure that the mass balance model correctly represents unit shutdowns and manual line-ups
  • Identify meters in gross error and report those meters to the area business teams to remediate erroneous meters
  • Ensure that data and calculations used to convert volume flows to mass
  • Publish material balance data to unit engineers for validation
  • Facilitate the development of tools that will enable better yield decisions
  • Work with the back-casting analyst to enable the back-casting process
  • Work with the unit engineers to plan and execute test runs to improve the accuracy of the crude selection tool
  • Troubleshoot meters and unit mass balance tools as required
Mass Loss/Gain
  • Report monthly refinery mass loss/gain from the AORA model with corrections for FCC Coke, OMS, and Process Losses (as required)
  • Correctly update the mass balance models to improve mass loss/gain reporting accuracy
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to identify and reduce hydrocarbon losses
Energy Management
  • Report monthly Solomon Energy Intensity Index (EII)
  • Lead Solomon Study for Process Engineering group
  • Develop tools to enable visibility into energy consumption across the plant
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to identify and reduce energy consumption
Other Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of and implement the Downstream Measurement Standard (prepared by Downstream Technical Services) and modify as required for site-specific needs
  • Actively participate and contribute to a Community of Practice with other Mass Balance & Energy Optimization Engineers and the DTS team
Who you are:
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering or data science work experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience from an accredited institution
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related discipline
  • Data Analytics background
  • Refinery experience
  • Process Engineering background
  • Prior experience using historians such as PI process book, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) such as cBliss, and Microsoft Office
