Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Centeroffers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services.

About the Prevention and Recovery Center (PARC):

PARC CSC provides early screening, prevention and intervention services for individuals ages 14 to 35 who have experienced a first episode of psychosis within the past five years.

PARC CSC provides comprehensive clinical services with multidisciplinary teams evaluating and addressing every participant's individual needs. Each team member completes training specific to first episode psychosis and adheres to the evidence-based "OnTrack" model of care.

Three clinical teams serve program participants, with each comprised of a psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, case manager, nurse, clinical pharmacist, supportive employment and education specialist, and a team lead. Additional staff provide outreach and educational services in the community and across the state of Indiana. The PARC CSC program aims to improve functioning, promote wellness and recovery, and ultimately improve outcomes for young people with psychotic disorders.

Job Role Summary

The Medical Assistant provides patient care which takes into account patient response to care provided, patient needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals. Alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the patients served.

Schedule: 4-days a week

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable populations of Marion County. Models Eskenazi values
  • Maintains a safe patient/clinic environment; practice is in compliance with Eskenazi's safety standards
  • Demonstrates good communication skills using appropriate medical terminology
  • Exhibits legal and ethical professional conduct, follows organizational/site-specific protocols/processes
  • Provides patient care which takes into account patient response to care provided, patient needs, problems, capabilities, limitations, and progress toward goals. Alters activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate of patients served
  • Integrates cultural/population specific diversity needs into patient care as well as integrating physiological, psychological and cultural needs
  • Measures and records vital signs, heights, weights, other parameters including pain assessment
  • Interviews patient and records history, chief complaint, other findings
  • Calls prescriptions (except Schedule II medications) to pharmacy for the provider per written orders
  • Prepares patients for examinations and performs routine screening tests
  • Collects and processes lab specimens including phlebotomy
  • Monitors follow-up of tests and lab studies done and notifies provider
  • Performs point-of-care urine testing
  • Prepares and administers medications (with exceptions per organizational or site-specific guidelines) with provider written order
  • Demonstrates competence/accountability in the administration of medications, treatments, performing tests
  • Performs CPR when needed
  • Accurately, legibly, legally documents findings, services provided (including medication administration), education/instructions given, completes other required documentation
  • Maintain clean work area
  • Answers phones/makes phone calls as needed/directed
  • Helps maintain clinic flow
  • Operates standard office equipment
  • Schedules appointments
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (stocking/ordering) including routine stocking of exam rooms
  • Alters activities/behaviors to provide population-specific and age-specific care
  • Maintains required certifications (organizationally and as required by site)
  • Assists with the orientation of other staff members including Medical Assistant Externs
  • Must sit together with Clinical Team

Job Requirements

  • Graduation from an education program for the medical assistant
  • CPR certification (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification is preferred)
  • Current TB Education certification is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to assess age-specific and population-specific needs of patients
  • Knowledge of various standard lab and medical procedures
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of ICD-9/CPT coding
  • Knowledge of health care insurance
  • Basic computer skills
  • Basic mathematic skills
  • Ability to recognize emergent situations and act appropriately
  • Ability to understand and carry out written orders
  • Ability to stand/walk for extensive periods of time
  • Exhibit hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity when working with patients and/or equipment
  • Ability to appropriately interact with patients from all economic, educational, social, cultural, ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposure to potentially dangerous/infectious materials and situations
