The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Child Health Specialty Clinics (CHSC), is seeking a 80% Medical Assistant II.
Position Responsibilities:
Under supervision of the Supervisory Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, performs patient care, triages patient concerns and questions, manages medical information and performs patient scheduling, registration and clinic support functions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in monitoring and facilitating patient and clinic flow by communicating with registration staff members, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, Program Coordinator, clinic staff members and patients and families. Assists in resolving any concerns.
- Assists Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners with physical examinations, including processes such as taking and recording vital signs with height/weight/head circumference, patient history, medication records, allergies and immunizations.
- Performs charge capture in EPIC for billing purposes.
- Manages medical records and information to ensure patient information is available. Sends requests to families for information and scans received information into EPIC.
- Receives and processes requests for prescription refills.
- Schedules patient appointments.
- Registers patients for appointments and obtains patient information as needed and insurance pre-authorization.
- Receives and triages patient's questions and concerns. Responds to questions as appropriate and forwards questions to clinicians as needed.
- Performs related clerical tasks including answering telephones, compiling data into reports, preparing correspondence and other related duties. Provides clerical support for clinical staff members.
- Knowledge of medical records documentation requirements.
- Assists with additional patient care functions as requested.

Child Health Specialty Clinics is a community-based public health agency that serves children and youth, birth through 21, who live in Iowa and have or are at an increased risk for a chronic condition, and have a need for special services. Chronic conditions can include physical, developmental, behavioral and or emotional issues. Services are provided through family to family support, care coordination and clinical services. Minimum Eligibility Requirements: - Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant or completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, or
- Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology, and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
License/Certifications: - Driver's license and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Manual Part V, Chapter 19).
