University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) is a 194-bed hospital that became part of Iowa's only comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.
The Wound Center Nurse Clinician is a clinical expert who provides care and coordination for wound care to the ambulatory adult and pediatric population with chronic, non-healing wound. This Nurse Clinician will collaborate with Nurse Leaders, staff, health care providers and patients/families to provide and support skin and wound care and wound prevention for ambulatory patients.
The role includes but is not limited to; modeling excellence in clinical practice related to skin and wound care, mentoring staff, providing education for healthcare staff and patients, clinical problem solving, and coordinating complex patient continuums.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Provides patient care to Wound Center patients and handles patient intake and discharge processes as assigned and according to hospital and nursing standards
- May also serve as Case Manager to a group of patients as assigned. This entails:
o Performing the initial nursing assessment, communicating findings with the assigned physician, assessing the wound stage and measurements, documenting care plans, evaluating the patient' status regarding desired outcomes, and identifying patient care situations that require intervention
o Participating in quality improvement initiatives, providing education to the patient or caregiver, and serving as a patient advocate in the delivery and coordination of the patient care
- Performs hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) related duties as assigned, upon completion of the training
- Collaborates as needed with other healthcare providers, Wound Center providers, Clinical Nurse Manager, Program Director and Medical Director regarding clinic and patient needs
- Assist in vein clinic as assigned after training completed
- Acts as clinical resource related to wound care for staff at outlying hospital and residential facilities providing care for our shared patient population
- Performs other duties as required.
Percent of Time: 90%
Schedule: 72 hours per two-week schedule with rotating days of the week
, day shift, no weekends, no University holidays, no call.

Required Qualifications: - A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
- Minimum of 1-year recent nursing experience
- Demonstrated expertise with skin and wound care and injury prevention
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including customer service, presentation skills and ability to translate complex technical terms to laymen's terms
- Ability to stay calm in all situations in a fast-paced team environment.
- Evidence of strong clinical problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Excel and Word
Desired Qualifications: - Wound Care Certification
- Basic knowledge of regulatory/accrediting requirements for healthcare organizations
- Working knowledge of computerized nursing systems
