McKinley Health Center aims to provide high-quality ambulatory healthcare and health education to students and medical expertise to University leadership. The Center is also accredited through the Accreditation Associate for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Our staff works on campus with an academically talented and ethnically diverse student population, including international students totaling 22.2 percent of the total student population, 18.8 percent for Asian American students, 11 percent for Latinx/e students, 5.0 percent for African American students, and 3.2 percent for multiracial students, with a total enrollment of over 56,000 students.

Job Summary
To provide primary mental health care for students presenting with mental health concerns.
Duties & Responsibilities

Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Take patient histories, sufficient to address the patient's chief complaint and other health concerns.
  • Provide mental health assessment and treatment for students with mental health problems. Appropriate treatments may include individual, couples and group psychotherapy if applicable, referral for hospitalization, and be consistent with limitations of MHU staff resources.
  • Prescribe, administer, and dispense prescription and nonprescription medications.
  • Provide emergency triage for crisis evaluation and management, including development of a safety /crisis plan, when necessary.
  • Follow up with patients to review lab test results and progress in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Make referrals to other providers as appropriate to facilitate treatment plan with standard and crisis interventions. This may include out-patient psychotherapeutic techniques or facilitating hospitalization at community hospitals on behalf of students.
  • Consult with other mental health care professionals, physicians and/or health care professionals to confirm difficult diagnosis and facilitate appropriate treatment plan.
  • Ensure that patients receive adequate education to effectively participate in their diagnostic and therapeutic plan, and that they understand and assent to that plan and understand other appropriate alternatives.
  • Complete all visit documentation in an appropriate and timely manner as determined by policy.
  • Display competency with regard to diagnosis and procedure coding.
  • Adhere to established Health Center policies and procedures including maintenance of records.
  • Develop and maintain technical skills necessary to provide excellent and efficient patient care. This includes competency with computer applications that enhance individual patient care and the efficiency of the health center.
  • Be efficient in the care of patients with regard to time spent with patients, number of patients seen, and resources utilized, such as laboratory, consultations, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Be effective in the care of patients, with regard to overall patient outcomes, satisfaction and cultural competence.
  • Provide patient access by staffing clinics and special events per policy.
  • Collaborate with other clinical staff for patient care.
  • Provide mental health consultation to Mental Health Unit clinicians.
  • Provide mental health consultation to health service physicians, Counseling Center staff, Housing and other appropriate University faculty and staff.
Practice and General Responsibilities
  • Share on-call responsibilities for after hours and weekend mental health emergencies. (Currently, there is no formal on-call responsibilities. This policy is subject to change if University needs should require.)
  • Participate in Mental Health Unit staff meetings and case conferences.
  • Actively participate in McKinley's quality improvement and risk management programs and its peer review processes as outlined in policy and annual plans.
  • Attend and participate in assigned McKinley and campus committees.
  • Participate in university and health center promotions and promotional material as needed.
  • Utilize other members of the health care team appropriate to their skill level, licensure, and classification. Treat patients, staff, and colleagues with courtesy and respect.
  • Adhere to University, Civil Service, Health Center and individual unit policies and procedures that serve as guidelines for individual practice. Guidelines for patient care management are the protocols of care.
  • Work within scope of practice and comply with privileges granted.
  • Responsible and accountable to support and ensure a culture of safety, quality and risk management including compliance with ethics.
  • Stay informed of the newest developments in mental health by attending educational conferences, literature reviews, and consulting with other clinical personnel.
  • Maintain a current Illinois license, Illinois Licensed Controlled Substance registration and federal DEA controlled drug registration.
  • Register and maintain access to the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program.
  • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (225 ILCS 65 et seq.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2 years or more experience working in Mental Health Nursing.
  • Masters Degree in Nursing.
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3100 - Nurse Practitioner position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 2/16/2025. Salary for this position is $105,851.20.
