The Stanford Libraries seeks a collaborative, dynamic, outgoing and service-oriented Library Welcome Desk Attendant (Portal Monitor) to provide outstanding frontline customer services for the Library Privileges team at the Cecil H. Green Library. This is a 21.25 hrs/week role with a standard Wednesday-Sunday schedule (see below). Additional hours may be available.

About the Position:

The Library Welcome Desk Attendant (Portal Monitor) is a member of the Access Services Department which includes the circulation, privileges, stacks, media, course reserves and interlibrary services teams. Our activities are centered around building and inventory access and core customer services. We value high-quality, just-in-time customer service to meet the academic and research needs of students, faculty, staff, affiliated scholars, and visitors of Stanford University.

We seek a dependable, focused, and communicative individual to fill this highly visible role at our entry desks. Using excellent communication skills, the staff member will assist users and ensure our entry and exit protocols are consistently applied. The library staff member will communicate library policies, answer questions, and ensure library visitors have registered before entering and check the bags of patrons who are exiting to ensure library materials are checked out. Workflow at the entry desks varies depending on the time of day and the academic calendar. Periods of high traffic may require the staff member to prioritize tasks or ask for additional help. The staff member will also be relied upon to notify the supervisor or public safety of any security concerns and report on emergencies and incidents following department procedures.

Work Schedule:

Fall and Spring schedule during academic year is:

Wednesday 7:00 PM-12:45 AM (no lunch), Thursday 7:00 PM-12:45 AM (no lunch), Saturday 2:00 PM-6:45 PM (no lunch), Sunday 12:00 PM-5:00 PM (no lunch)

A total of 21.25 hours per week.

This job posting is not eligible for remote work or a hybrid schedule.

Note on Academic Year hours:

Summer/Intersession and Winter schedules may alter the position's standard work schedule.

Hours and schedule vary according to Stanford's Academic Calendar and Green Library's operational need.

A shortened unpaid lunch period is optional at employee request.

Job Responsibilities:

●The employee will monitor the flow of users entering the library including maintaining compliance with building policies, ensuring library materials are properly checked out, referring patrons to appropriate campus and library resources.

●The position does not have any supervisory authority over other employees.

Characteristic Duties:

Portal Monitor may include job duties such as:

●Monitor entrance and exit to library which includes constant interaction with public.

●Assist visitor register with visitor registration software and check government issued identification upon patron entrance.

●Monitor card entry failure at library entrance, and report failures to library staff and/or supervisor on duty.

●Visually inspect incoming visitor's personal belongings to prevent banned materials entering the library.

●Regularly perform baggage checks on all patrons exiting and visually inspect for any checked-out library materials. Refer patrons to the circulation desk as needed.

●Report any suspicious activity, building access violations, property loss and/or any emergency. This may require calling emergency services or campus security, including writing incident reports.

●Record entrance statistics and gate counts on a daily basis.

●Keep workspace clean, presentable, safe from obstructions and tidy.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

●High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

● English language fluency. Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written).

●Demonstrated excellent customer service, including the ability to initiate public discourse and articulate policies in a clear and concise manner.

●Demonstrated professionalism including diplomacy, discretion, great judgement, manage confidential information and work effectively with a diverse team.

●Ability to prioritize tasks on the fly.

●Knowledge and experience with the Windows Operating System and web-based applications, including email and calendar applications.

●Ability to learn and successfully use Stanford-specific computer applications, perform data entry, word processing and web navigation.

●Demonstrated ability to learn and apply Stanford's commitment to a respectful workplace including, but not limited to, Affirmative Action, diversity, and a workplace free of any type of harassment as it applies to their work group.

Physical Requirements:

●Constantly stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat; perform desk-based computer tasks.

●Frequently use a telephone/radio, perform seated work.

●Occasionally lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to ten pounds.

●Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources, computer screens, mobile screens and to clearly observe patron behavior at up to 30 feet.

●May be exposed to fluctuating temperatures.

●May be exposed to allergens.

Working Conditions:

●Work is part-time.

●Schedule may vary according to academic calendar or building hours.

The expected pay range for this position is $25.93 to $31.29 per hour.Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
