Job Description:

NDCS employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions statewide, which house approximately 5,200 inmates. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
Performs varying levels of professional supervisory and medical work in a medical/surgical section of a public service health/correctional facility and/or provides advanced specialized medical work in a specialty field of medicine and surgery. Performs related work as required.

Supervises and/or participates in the examination and diagnosis of acutely ill patients and assumes responsibility for treatment.

Recommends admission and release of acutely ill patients.

Performs major or minor surgery as required.

Reads and interprets x-ray films.

Assists in the instruction of professional and sub-professional staff in the general field of medical care.

Performs routine medical services involving the examination, care and treatment of patients or staff.

May perform advanced medical work in one or more of the recognized medical specialties.

May participate in the examination and treatment of mentally ill patients.

Works closely with consultant staff in strengthening medical service available to the facility and assist in the instruction of professional and sub-professional staff in general and specialized fields of medical care.

May direct the medical services in the general medical and surgical sections of a large state facility with responsibility for care and treatment of patients.

Supervises physician of lower rank, graduate nurses and attendants in the performance of medical, nursing and custodial services.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: M.D. degree and license to practice medicine in the state of Nebraska plus three years experience as a visiting physician at an approved hospital or two years of experience as a staff physician at an approved hospital.

Other: Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program
