Job Summary
The Pipefitter (Refrigeration Mechanic) will install, repair, maintain, and modify heating/cooling systems on campus. This position interacts with campus customers, supervision, peers, and others to create a work environment which develops accountability for performance and teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the campus.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and performs needed repairs on heating/cooling systems, boilers, pumps, etc.
  • Makes equipment and piping systems work properly.
  • Installs new heating/cooling systems, coil units, and equipment.
  • Maintains steam piping, coiling, and pumps in tunnels.
  • Maintains condensate pumps, hot water pumps, and vacuum pumps on campus.
  • Maintains boilers, stills, autoclaves, traps, steam coils, steam pipes, hot water radiators, and PRV stations on campus.
  • Installs new laboratory systems of air vacuum and gases.
  • Assists and trains apprentices.
  • Drives and operates service vehicles used for pipefitter maintenance work, new installation, and/or repair work.

  • Additional Physical Demands
    1. May work in extreme weather conditions.
    2. May be exposed to potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
    3. May be exposed to chemicals, heavy dust, loud noise, chemical fumes, welding torches, and other general conditions.
    4. May have to use respiratory protection, and protective clothing and proper EPP equipment as needed.
    5. May work around radiation and/or biohazardous chemical with proper training.
    6. A Pipefitter/Refrigeration Mechanic is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities and Services.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Certificate of completion of Pipetrade apprenticeship under a registered Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training program.
      OR
      Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman Pipefitter or other Pipetrade classification with a minimum of five (5) years (60 months) of actual work in the trade, which may have included apprenticeship and/or applicable vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Pipefitters, Pipefitter Welders, Refrigeration Mechanics, Temperature Control Mechanics, Sprinkler Fitters, and/or Oil Burner Mechanics.
    • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at time of hire and which must be maintained throughout employment.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • CFC License
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • A working knowledge of heating, steam, cooling systems and all welding and soldering practices and procedures.
    • Extensive knowledge of the pipefitter/refrigeration trade, in the use of tools, rigging, and lifting equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and OSHA regulations for Piping/refrigeration work.
    • A working knowledge of OSHA safety procedures.
    • Excellent math skills in the use of layout, measurements, radius, and areas.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3309 - Pipefitter (Refrigeration Mechanic) position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is established based on a collective bargaining agreement and is currently $52.65/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
