Position Summary:

The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Medicine is seeking a Research Associate to work in laboratory of Dr. Klaus Hahn, Ronald G. Thurman Distinguished Professor, Pharmacology, UNC School of Medicine Chapel Hill. Dr. Hahn is leading a team that studies protein activities in living cells. The research involves developing fluorescent protein analogs or fluorescent reagents that report protein conformational changes and interactions. Novel approaches are used to control protein activity with either light or small molecules (optogenetics/chemogenetics). These tools are used to examine signaling networks governing immune cell function and metastasis. Advanced technologies in molecular biology, structural biology, protein engineering and microscopy are essential to perform these investigations. The Research Associate will assist Dr. Hahn and members of his laboratory with work on single molecule imaging to explore new methods for visualizing conformational changes of individual molecules within living cells. The Research Associate will be responsible for generating publication-quality figures, methods, and protocols that describe the key underlying trends in the data and enable others to reproduce the analyses. They will help Dr. Hahn disseminate knowledge within the lab by directly helping in the training of undergraduate students.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful candidate will work on multiple projects at the same time; therefore, strong multitasking and time management skills, as well as the ability to work independently and efficiently is required. The successful candidate will work closely with the other team members, as well as collaborators from multiple labs therefore strong problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently is required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful applicant will preferably have a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree or a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Pharmacology with experience in protein production and assay of enzymatic function. Some knowledge of advanced microscopy would be valuable.
