The successful candidate will be a key member of an in vivo team within the Early Respiratory & Immunology in vivo Department, performing in vivo and ex vivo studies to support a diverse range of immunology-related projects. This role specifically involves working as a lab-based scientist in the area of in vivo pharmacology. As a strongly self-motivated and independent individual you will be adept at working across functional areas, enabling you to maximize value from the available resources. The role will sometimes involve implementing protocols over timelines that extend outside of normal working patterns.

Respiratory and Immunology is one of AstraZeneca's key therapeutic areas and our aim is to transform the lives of patients with chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases including atopic dermatitis, arthritis and lupus (SLE), as well as lung conditions such as asthma and COPD.

The successful candidate will assist with the design, execution and analysis of experiments to generate data in support of pipeline projects. You will be expected to utilize your expertise to run various in vivo disease models, as well as provide input for the establishment of new in vivo models.

This Scientist position entails initiating in vivo studies, preparing small and large molecules (and other modalities) for administration, daily dosing and in-life scoring/assessments, coordinating and performing necropsies for tissue collection, processing tissues and setting up ex vivo tests and experiments, analyzing/reporting data and conclusions to team members and project teams. You must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Educational and Experience Requirements

A minimum of a BS and a minimum of 3 years direct experience. OR/

MS and a minimum of 1 year direct experience.

Significant lab-based in vivo experience and knowledge of ex vivo techniques for sample analysis (industry experience preferred)

  • Excellent hands-on rodent in vivo skills and the ability to independently run disease and mechanistic models, including administration of candidate drugs and collecting a range of biological samples.

  • Ability to perform in vitro/ex vivo laboratory work: PBMC/cell isolation, tissue processing for single cell suspensions, 10+ multiparameter FACS staining, FlowJo analysis, multiplex ELISA, RNA isolation, qPCR/gene array, and handling human biological materials.

  • A strong understanding of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and experience with related in vivo techniques and model development for drug discovery projects.

  • Experience of maintaining the highest standards of welfare and ethical compliance as well as ensuring the integrity of the data generated. Familiar with applying the 3Rs across the full range of studies.

  • Able to independently assess and report data with a clear understanding of its reliability, interpret findings and draw appropriate conclusions.

  • A thorough understanding of experimental design and applying the appropriate statistical methods.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and able to proficiently use computers for data acquisition, processing, analysis and presentation
