Position Summary

The Department of Anthropology seeks an undergraduate Academic Advisor. The advisor is responsible for providing expert academic advising that is proactive, student-centered, positive, and collaborative to an active case load of 100-200 undergraduate Anthropology and Anthropology exploring majors and minors. Essential to this position is the management of this case load in a way that is data driven and promotes inclusion, retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and academic interventions.

  • Provides academic advising to undergraduate Anthropology students to promote academic and professional success, through individual, group, and technology-based modalities. Maintains regular interaction with prospective Anthropology majors and continuing majors to provide comprehensive, holistic, academic advising that is student focused and promotes persistence.
  • Core academic advising duties include degree plans, major exploration, academic success and learning strategies, connection to student resources, interpretation and communication of University Policies such as major and minor requirements, general education curriculum, graduation requirements, and student support services.
  • Conducts regular degree and file audits, maintains current and accurate records documenting individual student progress toward degree requirements. Monitors student academic progress, student enrollment, graduation plans, assisting and identifying challenges in learning, and progress toward degree.
  • Utilizes confidential information and maintains FERPA requirements while implementing academic policies, procedures and protocols with high ethical standards.
  • Develops and maintains a strong working knowledge of campus academic, administrative, and personal support services for students, as well as academic policy and campus opportunities. Researches, identifies, and connects students to campus resources.
  • Provides a positive environment which assists students in their personal and academic growth and development by supporting students in clarifying personal and academic goals.
  • Assists in planning, conducting, and evaluating student learning opportunities and trainings such as major exploration, orientations, student learning supports, and outreach activities.
  • Utilizes resources and data to support and strengthen student communication, engagement, and outreach within the Department of Anthropology and University.
  • Develops and implements an undergraduate recruitment program.
  • Coordinates with College of Social Science Student and Academic Affairs Office regarding student progress, monthly advisor meetings, and College requirements.
  • Informs the Department Chair about student or program-related concerns in a timely manner and consults with the Department Chair as necessary.
  • Participates in Department of Anthropology events, such as faculty meetings, the Fall picnic, the Spring social networking event, graduation, etc.
  • Organizes the annual post-Baccalaureate Ceremony Reception in the Spring.
  • Serves on the Department of Anthropology's Undergraduate Curriculum and Programs Committee.
  • Represents the Department of Anthropology at college, university, and community events as directed.
  • Engages in work and behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which students and colleagues feel respected, valued, and supported.
  • Fulfills other duties as required.

Masters

Minimum Requirements

  • Masters Degree
  • Ability to work independently while functioning as a critical member of an interdependent team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication, public speaking, and presentation skills.
  • The ability to retain a high volume of programmatic, academic, college, and university related information while having the ability to critically think through complex situations.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to quickly learn) University, College, and Department of Anthropology academic policies and procedures.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and monitor deadlines.
  • Proficiency and comfort with technology including strong data management skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
  • Ability to develop trust, rapport, and positive working relationships with diverse students, staff, and faculty.

Desired Qualifications

  • Academic advising experience preferred.
  • Experience working in an academic setting preferred.
