The Certified Sterile Processing Technician plays a vital role at WellStar, ensuring that medical equipment meets the highest standards of quality and safety. This position is responsible for processing, cleaning, and sterilizing medical instruments, as well as handling and storing essential supplies. Attention to detail and adherence to protocols are key components of this role.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Decontamination & Cleaning:
  • Collect, clean, disinfect, and decontaminate instruments, supplies, and equipment per hospital policies, AORN recommendations, AAMI guidelines, and TJC standards.
  • Prioritize tasks based on the operating room and hospital unit needs.
  • Disassemble and inspect instruments, selecting appropriate cleaning tools and detergents.
  • Operate decontamination equipment (washer-decontaminator, cart washer, ultrasonic cleaner).
  • Restock surgical implants and supplies as needed.

Inspection & Assembly:
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and need for repair.
  • Assemble, wrap, or containerize instruments and equipment for sterilization.
  • Ensure proper packaging and labeling of instruments using appropriate sterilization indicators.
  • Resolve tray issues by consulting with OR staff and supply coordinators.
  • Assist OR teams in locating trays and facilitating turnover.

Sterilization:
  • Select appropriate sterilization methods (steam, gas plasma, peracetic acid) based on instrument requirements.
  • Load and unload sterilizers, ensuring proper documentation.
  • Perform biological tests, including diagnostic and biological indicator testing.
  • Handle and store sterilized items in designated locations.

Quality Control & Equipment Monitoring:
  • Inspect sterilizers and equipment to ensure proper functioning, reporting any malfunctions.
  • Perform daily quality assurance tests and document results.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain sterilization equipment, including 3M auto readers.

Compliance & Safety:
  • Follow policies for infection control, bloodborne pathogens, and safety standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient, department, and hospital information.
  • Contribute to a safe, effective work environment and participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to achieve hospital goals.

Education & Training:
  • Serve as a resource for department staff and assist with training new employees and students.
  • Participate in educational programs, in-service meetings, and departmental training.
  • Ensure work areas remain clean and organized.

Distribution of Supplies:
  • Scan and deliver sterile supplies, instruments, and trays to hospital units as needed.
  • Respond to urgent requests for instruments, trays, or equipment.

Other Duties:
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership.
  • Comply with all WellStar Health System policies and standards.

Required Qualifications:
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Surgical Technology program preferred.

Licensing/Certification:
  • Certification in Central Sterile Processing or Sterile Processing & Distribution required.

Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in sterile processing, or completion of an accredited sterile processing program with 400 clinical hours.

Skills:
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use technology in clinical settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage time effectively.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
