Job Summary

We are seeking a Tool Room Grinder to join our team. As a Tool Room Grinder, you will be responsible for operating a selection of manual tool and cutter grinding equipment for a variety of our machining applications. This is a skilled role. The role also requires a high level of attention to detail to ensure quality production and reliability in attendance to ensure our on-time delivery to our customers stays at a world class level.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow established work instructions and company procedures to ensure safe, quality production.


  • Ability to set up and run tool and cutter grinders such as: surface grinders, Pratt & Whitney R-6, Cincinatti Monoset, Hybco form relief grinder, #2 Tool and Cutter Grinder, Sterling drill grinder, etc.


  • Understanding of the grades, shapes, and styles of grinding wheels.


  • Ability to make basic formed grinding wheels using radius and angle diamond wheel dresser and crush form wheel dresser


  • Ability to make step drills, step reamers, and flat form tools


  • Understanding the use of multiple fixtures and attachments associated with tool grinding and sharpening


  • Ability to sharpen a complex geometry cutting tools including drills, taps, reamers, step-drills, circular and dovetail form tools


  • Fluency in shop math and the ability to calculate angles, clearances, radial and axial relief using trigonometry mathematics


  • Responsible for routine machinery maintenance and running visual tests on broken or worn parts while keeping inventory of machine replacement parts.


  • Fluent and well versed in blueprint interpretation and title block GD&T


  • Robust knowledge in the use of instruments such as calipers, gauges, indicators, micrometers, optical comparators, and other hand tools related to the occupation.


  • Ability to communicate to other departments status and updates of the machining group.


  • Follow safety procedures and guidelines in the assembly process.


  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.


  • Leads all cross training and new hire training activities.


  • Other duties as assigned.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Indirect through training new associates

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Certificate in machine shop technology or technology/machinist - preferred associate degree


  • 3-4 years of experience in a tool making environment beyond post-secondary or trade school education


  • Recognized apprenticeship may be required


Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Strong analytical, communication and computer skills.


  • Strong understanding of mathematics


  • Strong communicator and team player


  • Ability to work independently and high attention to detail.

  • The employee must consistently lift and /or move up to 75 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
