The Underwriting Assistant directly supports the Underwriters by performing a variety of tasks including creating new group proposals and upgrades and preparing group renewal documents. All the work performed is under the daily guidance, review and authority of the Underwriter, Advanced Underwriter and AICK Management.

"This position provides the option to work onsite or in a hybrid capacity (at least 9 days per month onsite) after completing training (3-6 months), in line with our Telecommuting Policy. Applicants should currently reside in Kansas or Missouri or be willing to relocate to these areas as part of the employment process."

Compensation

$19.81 - $23.50 hourly

The compensation range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid. All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive wages that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training. The range may vary above or below the stated amounts.

What you'll do
  • Determine requested benefit structure and set parameters utilizing underwriting rating system. This requires setting accurate benefit maximums, elimination periods, reductions, benefit percentages, etc. (Life and Disability).
  • Manipulate spreadsheets and/or enter confidential demographic information including birthdates, salaries, gender, occupations, and industry codes into the rating system
  • Evaluate the requested benefits to assure the group complies with Kansas Insurance Department statutes along with Advance's underwriting requirements.
  • Work with BCBSKS Sales personnel for missing information needed to complete rating process.
  • Prepare final proposal documents to provide to Underwriter for review and disbursement to Sales.
  • Completion of group renewals to include entering of all applicable information through utilization of data generated from various AICK systems. Prepare final renewal documents for Underwriter to review and disburse to Sales. File and image all renewal documents.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance of AICK and corporate record retention policies.
  • Provide assistance to AICK Operations through phone support and other administrative activities as needed.
  • There is a necessity to meet daily, weekly, and monthly time constraints. Heavy workload with a high volume of email, electronic messaging, and phones. Position requires continuous mental effort. Work is repetitive with a high regard to accuracy. Requires ability to withstand pressure because of fluctuating and demanding workload, handling it in a positive and professional manner.
  • Support of AICK Underwriting IT systems through identification of issues and testing as needed.
  • Direct contact with re-insurers on complex rating scenarios.
  • Complete responsibilities on a personal computer at least 70% of the day.
  • Must meet required performance standards for department turnaround guarantees and accuracy levels.
  • Successful candidate will be expected to maintain a record of a low number of unscheduled absences.
  • Must actively participate on the Underwriting Team.
  • Strong organizational skills are necessary to prioritize workloads to meet departmental service guarantees.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
  • Must comply with corporate compliance program.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must comply with and implement corporate information security policies, standards, and guidelines relative to access control.
  • Responsible for maintaining an awareness and understanding of the business unit recovery plan for the department you work in and the corporation's business continuity program in general.

  • Other duties as assigned by AICK Management.

What you need
  • High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • Strong data entry skills to effectively operate within AICK systems and programs. To perform the duties of the position, the incumbent should have strong experience with Word and Excel.
  • Innovative thinker with good judgement, analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate in a professional manner across all lines of business using all forms of communication.
  • Demonstrate teamwork behaviors by positively contributing to team culture.
  • Ability to work under time constraints with frequent interruptions.
  • Record of low absenteeism.
