The Unit Coordinator works under the direction of the Nurse Manager or designee to coordinate the activities essential to the effective functioning of the patient care unit. She/he acts as a key contact person for the nursing unit; performs appropriate tasks to implement physician orders, clerical tasks, and reception duties.

She/he acts as a key contact person for the nursing unit; performs appropriate tasks to implement physician orders, clerical tasks, and reception duties.

Essential Functions:

• Maintains NWH CAREfirst standards of behavior while working toward accomplishing the hospital goals of acknowledging customers; introducing self; explaining situation and answering questions in a warm and welcoming manner

• Greets, directs, and assists all persons arriving on the unit; answers phone; and receives and relays messages accurately and in a timely fashion

• Maintains a clean and safe working environment assuring a positive first impression of the area

• Identifies opportunities for improvement and provides service recovery as appropriate

• Demonstrates competence in all software systems in use on the assigned unit

• Acts as liaison between the unit and other departments

• Facilitates transfers to other facilities as directed

• Transcribes physician orders appropriately, accurately, and in a timely fashion

• Orders supplies and equipment; maintains designated par levels of supplies

• Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and transfer of patients, as assigned

• Maintains patient medical records

• Ensures supplies and medications, once received on the unit, are given to the RN or are stored safely and securely

• Demonstrates knowledge of emergency codes/procedures and intervenes as appropriate to the role

• Assists with the orientation of new employees

• Serves as a resource to staff, volunteers, physicians, and students

• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous clerical/secretarial experience in a health care setting preferred. Basic computer skills including keyboarding and medical terminology preferred.

Physical Environment:

The Unit Coordinator works in a satisfactory physical environment with occasional distraction from machine or related noise or exposure to unpleasant elements such as chemical fumes, human waste odors, dust or temperature variations.
