Job Description:
The Nebraska State Historical Society is seeking an organized and visitor-focused individual to serve as Visitor Services Coordinator at the Nebraska History Museum. As a member of the museum's Visitor Services team, this position ensures the public has a positive experience at the museum, assists with special events and activities related to museum programming, and monitors museum safety and tidiness. The Visitor Services Coordinator will work alongside a dedicated group of museum professionals to make sure every museum visitor has an equally outstanding experience.

The schedule for this position is Tuesday-Saturday 8:00 - 4:30 with occasional events outside of these hours.

Job duties

• Oversees front-end customer service. This includes daily operations such as opening and closing registers, greeting visitors, answering phones, promoting education programming, highlighting exhibits, answering guest questions, and accepting payment for admissions, merchandise, and services.

• Carries out opening and closing procedures including floor checks, ensuring phones and point-of-sale system are working properly, and follows proper cash-handling procedures.

• Answers the phone and relays calls and messages in a timely manner.

• Monitors museum security activity and reports Issues to appropriate parties.

• Tracks daily museum attendance and reports numbers to appropriate staff.

• Assists with restocking, and completing quarterly gift shop inventory.

• Receiving and checking in merchandise, merchandising displays, and museum deliveries.

• Maintains appearance and cleanliness of gift shop, front desk, museum entrance, and common areas which Includes light housekeeping functions.

• Assist with set up, tear down, and staffing of museum special events and programs

• Coordinates with staff, volunteers, and work-study students to ensure that the admissions desk is adequately staffed

• Communicate and enforce the museum's policies and procedures.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Coursework/Training or experience in customer assistance, public relations, event planning, sales, recreation, Nebraska history, supervision, or working directly with the public. OR Post high school coursework/training in social/behavioral science or business administration.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of security practices. Demonstrated experience in a retail environment; providing work direction to others. Fluency in Spanish.

Other: This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license or another form of reliable transportation.

Regular and reliable attendance is required.

• Strong computer, point-of-sale (POS), and database skills

• Cash handling experience

• Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment

• Must be able to work Saturdays and occasional evenings

• Enthusiasm to connect people from diverse communities to history
